Quick read

Sean Strickland spent the day in Newport Beach, California, where Khamzat Chimaev is currently training, in an apparent attempt to provoke a confrontation. Strickland repeatedly tagged his location on social media throughout the day, claiming he was only ten minutes from Chimaev's gym and that fighters training with Chimaev follow him and would have seen his posts. In his social media commentary, Strickland referenced Chimaev allegedly saying he would try to kill Strickland on the street, and challenged him to show up. Strickland stated he believed Chimaev would come but was not surprised when he didn't, adding that Chimaev should not mess with him as he's "the last guy in America you'd want to run up on."

Strickland, the 35-year-old middleweight champion out of Xtreme Couture, posted repeated location updates claiming he was as close as ten minutes from Chimaev's gym. The 31-7 fighter referenced an alleged statement from Chimaev about wanting to kill him on the street, and used that as the basis for his public challenge, saying Chimaev's own training partners follow him on social media and would have seen every post. When Chimaev did not appear, Strickland said he was unsurprised, adding that Chimaev should think carefully before confronting him, calling himself "the last guy in America you'd want to run up on."

Chimaev, the number-one ranked middleweight and number-ten pound-for-pound fighter in the world, trains out of Allstars Training Center and carries a 15-1 record. The six-foot-two, 32-year-old from the United Arab Emirates is one of the most dangerous wrestlers in the division, averaging 5.29 takedowns per 15 minutes alongside a 60 percent striking accuracy rate.

Why it matters

  • Strickland is the reigning middleweight champion, and Chimaev sits at number one in the division, making any escalation between the two carry real title implications.
  • The public nature of Strickland's social media campaign puts pressure on Chimaev to respond, either publicly or eventually inside the octagon.
  • Strickland's six-foot-one, orthodox stance and high-volume striking — 6.04 significant strikes landed per minute — would contrast sharply with Chimaev's grappling-heavy, smothering style.
