Islam Makhachev addresses urban development issues in Dagestan amid flooding

Islam Makhachev has repeatedly drawn attention to chaotic construction problems in Dagestan, particularly in Makhachkala. He criticized low-quality residential complexes built too close together and numerous unauthorized construction projects. Seventeen days ago, as flooding hit the region, Makhachev called on regional leadership to address construction issues, saying Makhachkala has turned into one chaotic construction site. He recently reposted content from geographer Dmitry Koryukhin showing aerial photos highlighting the urban development problems. The post notes this reflects a broader Russia-wide issue of excessive high-rise construction even in cities with declining populations. Koryukhin is a teacher from Yaroslavl who has lived in the Caucasus for six years and was named Dagestan's Teacher of the Year in 2025.
