Five-time world champion and 1976 Olympic gold medalist Nikolai Balboshin discussed his extraordinary grip strength in interviews. Balboshin explained that he would judge opponents by their handshake before matches, and during competition he could squeeze forearms so hard that opponents' hands would swell from restricted blood flow. He recounted breaking a dynamometer during a medical examination when it maxed out at 120, and that he once squeezed a training partner's arm so hard the wrestler couldn't continue fighting with three minutes remaining. In his autobiography, Balboshin also described making a famous coach's fingers appear flattened during a prolonged handshake battle, and intentionally giving the King of Sweden a grip strong enough to make his fingers crack during a medal ceremony. The legendary wrestler's grip strength was clearly one of his signature competitive advantages.
