Justin Gaethje has been elevated to interim lightweight champion and ranked as the division's top contender following the UFC's first rankings update of 2026 after UFC 324, where he defeated Paddy Pimblett. The move sets the stage for a unification clash with reigning lightweight king Ilia Topuria, though the matchup has not been officially confirmed.

Charles Oliveira
Charles Oliveira

Gaethje's rise shuffled the rest of the 155-pound landscape significantly. Arman Tsarukyan was displaced from the top spot, while Charles Oliveira slipped to number three and Max Holloway dropped to number four. Those two will meet at UFC 326 in a BMF title defense, adding further intrigue to an already crowded division.

Valentina Shevchenko

Oliveira, 36, carries a 37-11-0 record and brings one of the most complete submission games in lightweight history, averaging 2.6 submission attempts per 15 minutes alongside 2.22 takedowns in the same span. The Brazilian out of Chute Boxe Diego Lima also lands at a 54 percent striking accuracy clip, making him dangerous at every range.

Max Holloway
Max Holloway

Holloway, the 34-year-old Hawaiian ranked ninth pound-for-pound, enters the Oliveira bout at 27-9-0 and remains one of the sport's most prolific volume strikers, landing 7.2 significant strikes per minute. His 69-inch reach and aggressive output have defined his move up to lightweight.

Why it matters

  • Gaethje as interim champion puts immediate pressure on Topuria to agree to a unification bout
  • Oliveira vs. Holloway at UFC 326 could reorder the top of the lightweight rankings again before that fight happens
  • In women's flyweight, Natalia Silva's rise to number one sets up a potential title shot against Valentina Shevchenko, who holds a 26-4-1 record and remains champion at 38 years old
  • Jean Silva's leap into the featherweight top five adds another name to a congested 145-pound picture

These moves are based on post-UFC 324 rankings updates and have not received formal UFC confirmation.
