In a conversation with Robert F. Kennedy Jr., Mike Tyson discussed the poor quality of food he experienced during his three years in prison, describing it as consisting mostly of sugar and processed foods. Tyson explained that the Federal prison system spends approximately 60 cents per day on feeding inmates, resulting in meals dominated by donuts, chips, and sugary items with no healthy options. He argued that this ultra-processed diet makes people more aggressive and contributes to high levels of violence in prisons, with inmates resorting to fighting and violence over minor provocations. Kennedy cited research showing that improving prison food quality can reduce violence by 50% and disciplinary measures in juvenile facilities by 70%. Tyson also discussed how proper nutrition from his mentor Cus D'Amato changed his life, and how his family suffered health consequences from poor nutrition, including his sister dying from obesity and his mother experiencing lifelong health problems.
