Sean Strickland took to social media to fire back at Khamzat Chimaev following comments Chimaev made referencing the Muslim community in New Jersey and suggesting Strickland would not be able to carry weapons there.

Strickland, 35, labeled Chimaev a coward, taking particular issue with what he characterized as veiled threats involving Chimaev's friends and the wider Muslim community. The reigning middleweight champion added that while Chimaev may reside in America, he does not truly understand what it means to be American — or, in Strickland's words, what it means to be a man. It is worth noting that Strickland himself has a documented history of inflammatory public statements.

Why it matters

  • Strickland and Chimaev are the two biggest names in the middleweight division right now, making any public confrontation between them significant
  • The social media exchange adds a personal and heated dimension to what is already a compelling potential title matchup
  • Both fighters' willingness to escalate rhetoric publicly could influence how and when the UFC looks to book the fight
