Sean Strickland has responded to Khamzat Chimaev's comments about the Muslim community in New Jersey and Strickland's inability to carry weapons there. Strickland called Chimaev a coward for making threats about having friends attack him, stating: "That's why you're a coward. All these threats: 'We'll jump you, my Muslim friends will jump you.' You may live in America, but you have no idea what it means to be American or just a man." The exchange represents the latest chapter in an ongoing verbal feud between the two fighters. The post's poll question humorously notes that Strickland has also made threats himself.

Sean Strickland has fired back at Khamzat Chimaev following comments the Swedish-born contender made regarding the Muslim community in New Jersey and Strickland's restricted ability to carry weapons in the state.

Strickland, 35, used pointed language to challenge Chimaev's character, paraphrasing threats in which Chimaev allegedly suggested his associates would attack Strickland in a group. "That's why you're a coward," Strickland said. "All these threats: 'We'll jump you, my Muslim friends will jump you.' You may live in America, but you have no idea what it means to be American or just a man." The current UFC middleweight champion made clear he views the gang-threat approach as a fundamental failure of character.

Why it matters

  • Strickland is champion; Chimaev is the top-ranked contender, making their feud directly relevant to the division's title picture.
  • The personal nature of the exchange extends well beyond typical pre-fight promotion, raising questions about how the rivalry ultimately gets resolved inside the octagon.
  • Strickland himself has been noted to have made inflammatory remarks of his own, adding a layer of irony to his "coward" characterization of Chimaev.
