Khamzat Chimaev and Sean Strickland have given contradictory accounts of their gym encounters and rivalry. Chimaev claims Strickland avoided training with him by switching gyms whenever Chimaev showed up, moving between Xtreme Couture and UFC PI, and only started talking after Chimaev left, adding that he believes Strickland is upset because Chimaev beat him in the gym. Strickland counters that he made a joke about Chechnya which Chimaev took seriously, leading to threats in a group chat. Strickland says he challenged Chimaev to meet in person, but Chimaev never showed up or responded. Strickland accused Chimaev of building his career on a "scary boogeyman" image.
