Quick read

Veteran lightweight Jim Miller secured his 14th UFC submission victory at age 42, finishing his opponent with a guillotine choke at UFC 328. Miller now sits just two fights away from setting the all-time record of 50 UFC appearances. He already holds the record for most UFC wins with 28 and ranks second in total finishes with 20, trailing only Charles Oliveira's 21. Miller also ranks second in submissions with 14, behind Oliveira's 17. Remarkably, in his last 10 fights after turning 38, Miller has achieved a 7-3 record with all seven victories coming by finish, representing a 70% finish rate. Miller's career was significantly impacted by Lyme disease contracted from a tick bite during his prime years, which changed his body composition, but he successfully recovered and continues competing at an elite level.

Jim Miller turned back the clock once again at UFC 328 on May 9, submitting his opponent via guillotine choke to record his 14th career UFC submission victory — an achievement made all the more striking by the fact that Miller is 42 years old.

The New Jersey-born lightweight, who competes out of Sussex County MMA, now carries a 39-19 record accumulated over a career spanning nearly two decades inside the Octagon. Fighting out of a southpaw stance at five-foot-eight with a 71-inch reach, Miller has quietly assembled a statistical résumé that few in UFC history can rival. He already holds the record for most wins in UFC history with 28, and his 20 total finishes place him second on the all-time list. His 14 submission victories also rank second all-time in the promotion.

Charles Oliveira
Charles Oliveira

Both of those second-place marks trail only Brazilian lightweight Charles Oliveira, who holds the UFC records for career submissions with 17 and total finishes with 21. Oliveira, currently ranked third in the lightweight division at 36 years old, set a high bar — but Miller continues to close the gap.

Perhaps most remarkable is what Miller has done in the later chapter of his career. After turning 38, a period during which his body was reshaped by a battle with Lyme disease contracted from a tick bite during what should have been his prime, Miller has gone 7-3 in his last ten fights. Every one of those seven wins came by finish, a 70 percent finish rate that would be impressive for a fighter half his age.

Why it matters

  • Miller is now just two UFC appearances away from 50, which would set the all-time record for Octagon appearances.
  • His 28 UFC wins already stand alone as the most in promotional history.
  • At 42 and with a 70 percent finish rate over his last ten outings, Miller's late-career surge raises the ceiling on how long elite fighters can compete.
  • A run at 50 appearances gives the lightweight division a compelling long-term storyline independent of title contention.
