Reports of a confirmed September matchup between Arman Tsarukyan and Charles Oliveira appear to have been premature, with Tsarukyan himself walking back any suggestion that a fight had been officially booked.

Tsarukyan clarified that his earlier comments about a possible September bout were speculative rather than a reflection of any finalized agreement with the UFC. The 29-year-old Russian lightweight said his next appearance could come in September, October, December, or potentially not until next year, and that no opponent has been locked in. Currently ranked first in the lightweight division and fighting out of American Top Team, Tsarukyan carries a 23-3-0 record and has established himself as one of the most dangerous contenders in the 155-pound weight class. He averages 3.85 significant strikes per minute and a strong 3.26 takedowns per 15 minutes, making him a complete threat on the feet and on the mat.

Oliveira, meanwhile, remains firmly in the lightweight picture at number three in the divisional rankings and number 11 in the pound-for-pound standings. The 36-year-old Brazilian, who trains out of Chute Boxe Diego Lima, holds a 37-11-0 record and brings an exceptional submission game to any fight, averaging 2.6 submission attempts per 15 minutes alongside 2.22 takedowns per 15 minutes. His 54 percent striking accuracy also ranks among the more efficient in the division.

Why it matters

  • Tsarukyan is the top-ranked lightweight contender, so his next assignment carries significant title implications
  • A matchup with Oliveira, the number-three ranked contender, would be a high-stakes collision near the top of the division
  • The stylistic contrast between Tsarukyan's wrestling-heavy pressure and Oliveira's elite submission offense makes this a compelling potential booking whenever it is officially confirmed
  • Until the UFC announces a formal agreement, any timeline for this fight remains open
