Tensions boiled over at the UFC White House press conference on June 13 when lightweight contender Ilia Topuria shoved champion Justin Gaethje during their face-off, less than 24 hours before the two are scheduled to fight for the title.

The confrontation escalated after Gaethje challenged Topuria to back up a threat he had made. Topuria obliged with a shove, then told Gaethje he had deliberately stopped short of hitting him in the face to avoid doing damage before the bout.

Topuria, 29, carries a 17-1-0 record into the lightweight title fight and holds the number-one spot in the pound-for-pound rankings despite sitting second in the divisional rankings. The Spanish fighter, nicknamed "El Matador," trains out of Climent Club and has built his reputation on a well-rounded game, averaging 4.81 significant strikes per minute while also threatening with nearly two takedown attempts per 15 minutes.

Gaethje, 37, is the reigning lightweight champion with a 28-5-0 record. "The Highlight" out of Genesis Training Center is one of the sport's most aggressive strikers, connecting at a 58 percent accuracy rate and averaging 6.48 significant strikes per minute. At five-foot-eleven with a 70-inch reach, he holds a physical edge over the five-foot-seven Topuria.

Why it matters

  • The shove signals genuine animosity heading into a fight with the lightweight belt on the line.
  • Topuria's pound-for-pound standing means a title win would reshape the top of the sport across multiple divisions.
  • The stylistic contrast is stark — Gaethje's elite striking volume against Topuria's blend of crisp striking and active wrestling threat.
  • At 29 versus 37, the age gap adds another layer of narrative to the championship stakes.
