St-Pierre, 45, retired with a 26-2-0 record and is widely regarded as one of the greatest fighters in UFC history. The Canadian Orthodox striker out of Tristar Gym was a dominant two-division champion known for his relentless pace, landing 3.78 significant strikes per minute at 53 percent accuracy while also averaging an elite 4.16 takedowns per 15 minutes throughout his career.

Gaethje, 37, enters the conversation as the reigning UFC lightweight champion, carrying a 28-5-0 record. The Arizona-born fighter out of Genesis Training Center has built a reputation as one of the most ferocious strikers in the division's history, landing 6.48 significant strikes per minute at a remarkable 58 percent accuracy. Standing five-foot-eleven with a 70-inch reach, the man nicknamed "The Highlight" has punished opponents throughout his career almost entirely on the feet, averaging virtually no submission attempts over 15 minutes.

Why it matters

  • St-Pierre's public call adds prominent pressure on Gaethje to consider his future at the top of the lightweight division
  • At 37, Gaethje is at an age where elite fighters often face questions about their long-term health and competitive viability
  • The opinion carries weight given St-Pierre's own legacy as a champion who retired largely on his own terms
  • Gaethje's response to the comments could shape the conversation around the lightweight title picture going forward
