Michael Morales had a sharp answer for Ian Garry after the Irish welterweight publicly suggested the undefeated Ecuadorian should consider a move to middleweight, with Morales firing back in blunt, expletive-laden fashion on social media.

Garry had framed his comments as something of a compliment, arguing that Morales is young, big, and talented enough to succeed at 185 pounds. He paired that praise with a warning, however, stating that if Morales chose to remain at welterweight, he would finish him. Morales was not interested in the counsel.

The 27-year-old from Ecuador is currently ranked second in the welterweight division and carries a perfect 19-0-0 professional record. Standing six feet tall with a 79-inch reach, Morales does have the frame that often invites speculation about moving up. He lands 5.62 significant strikes per minute at a 49 percent accuracy rate, and also mixes in takedowns at a clip of 1.09 per 15 minutes, making him a well-rounded threat at 170 pounds.

Why it matters

  • Morales sits at number two in the welterweight rankings, meaning any future matchup with Garry would carry significant divisional weight.
  • Garry's suggestion doubles as a callout, framing a potential fight while simultaneously questioning whether Morales belongs at the weight class.
  • The exchange puts a potential Morales-Garry welterweight bout firmly in the conversation among top contenders in the division.
