Eddie Hearn has shed light on how welterweight contender Ian Machado Garry came to sign with Matchroom Talent Agency, emphasizing that the deal is a management arrangement entirely separate from any direct negotiations with the UFC.

Garry, nicknamed "The Future," enters this new partnership as one of the most prominent names in the welterweight division. The 28-year-old holds a record of 17-1-0 and currently sits at number one in the divisional rankings. Standing six-foot-three with a 74-inch reach, the orthodox striker lands 4.78 significant strikes per minute at a 54 percent accuracy rate. Hearn was clear that Garry's existing UFC contract remains fully intact and that his next scheduled fight proceeds as planned under those terms.

Hearn also took care to distinguish the Garry situation from a separate matter involving heavyweight champion Tom Aspinall, suggesting the two cases should not be conflated. Aspinall, 33, carries a record of 15-3-0 and holds the UFC heavyweight title while ranking sixth in the pound-for-pound standings. The Englishman trains out of Team Kaobon and is one of the division's most dangerous finishers, landing 7.63 significant strikes per minute at a striking accuracy of 67 percent, while also averaging 2.62 takedowns per 15 minutes.

Why it matters

  • Garry's signing with Matchroom as a talent agency could shape his commercial profile and future leverage heading into title contention at welterweight
  • Hearn's clarification draws a firm line between talent representation and promotional dealings, reducing the chance of UFC friction over the arrangement
  • The distinction from the Aspinall situation signals that multiple high-profile UFC fighters are now navigating outside representation, a trend worth monitoring across the sport
