Unbeaten Ecuadorian prospect Michael Morales has been tapped as the backup fighter for the upcoming welterweight title fight between champion Islam Makhachev and Ian Garry.

Morales, ranked second in the welterweight division, carries a perfect 19-0-0 record and is just 27 years old. The six-foot orthodox fighter out of Entram Gym brings one of the most active striking outputs in the division, landing 5.62 significant strikes per minute across his career. His 79-inch reach — 201 centimeters — gives him a physical edge over most welterweights. Beyond the backup role, Morales has made clear he is ready to stay active and has specifically called out Carlos Prates as a potential opponent.

Makhachev, the reigning welterweight champion, enters the title defense with a 28-1-0 record. The 34-year-old Russian southpaw from Eagles MMA is the number-one pound-for-pound fighter on the roster, connecting on 58 percent of his significant strikes while also threatening with 3.2 takedowns per 15 minutes and 1.1 submission attempts per 15 minutes.

Prates, the fighter Morales called out, holds a 24-7-0 record and is ranked fifth in the division. The 32-year-old Brazilian known as "The Nightmare" fights out of Vale Top Team and presents a serious striking threat from a switch stance, averaging 3.77 significant strikes per minute with a 78-inch reach.

Why it matters

  • Morales stepping in as backup keeps the title fight insured against late withdrawals
  • A potential Morales vs. Prates matchup would pit the division's second-ranked fighter against its fifth, with major rankings implications
  • The contrasting styles — Morales's volume striking against Prates's power and reach — make for a compelling style clash at 170 pounds
