Rafael Fiziev has distanced himself from being called a product of the Kyrgyz martial arts school, stating he considers himself self-made. He also argued that Valentina Shevchenko, who left Kyrgyzstan after five or six years, should not be labeled as a product of that system either. Fiziev did praise Kyrgyz fighters Rajabaliev and Orolbai as genuine phenomena, comparing their rare natural gifts to those of Islam Makhachev, Khabib Nurmagomedov, and Jon Jones.
