Quick read

Rafael Fiziev has pushed back on being described as a product of the Kyrgyz martial arts school, stating he considers himself self-made. Fiziev also argued that Valentina Shevchenko, who trained in Kyrgyzstan for only five or six years before moving on, should not be considered a product of that system either. He praised several fighters connected to Kyrgyzstan, singling out Razhababli as a phenomenon unlike any other fighter in the world, while noting that Justin Gaethje possesses a similarly rare natural gift.

Rafael Fiziev has gone on record to distance himself from any association with the Kyrgyz martial arts system, insisting he is a self-made fighter who does not owe his development to that school of training.

Fiziev, 33, carries a 14-5 record and is currently ranked seventh in the UFC lightweight division. The Kazakhstan-born Tiger Muay Thai product fights out of the switch stance and brings considerable striking volume to the cage, averaging 4.71 significant strikes landed per minute at 52 percent accuracy. He has built his reputation as a dynamic, unpredictable striker rather than a product of any regional pipeline.

In his remarks, Fiziev extended the same argument to Valentina Shevchenko, contending that spending only five or six years training in Kyrgyzstan before moving on does not make her a product of that country's martial arts system. Shevchenko, 38, is the reigning UFC Women's Flyweight champion and holds a record of 26-4-1. She averages 3.14 significant strikes per minute and completes 2.62 takedowns per 15 minutes, a testament to a well-rounded game developed across multiple training environments, including her current home at Tiger Muay Thai.

Fiziev also offered praise for two fighters he views as possessing exceptional natural ability. He singled out Razhababli as a phenomenon unlike anyone else in the sport, and drew a comparison to Justin Gaethje, whom he described as possessing a similarly rare, innate gift. Gaethje, the 37-year-old reigning lightweight champion from the United States, backs that reputation with a 28-5 record and one of the most aggressive outputs in the division, landing 6.48 significant strikes per minute at 58 percent accuracy.

Why it matters

  • Fiziev's remarks touch on the broader question of how fighters from Central Asia are credited and categorized within the sport's global landscape.
  • His inclusion of Shevchenko reframes the legacy of Kyrgyz combat sports, potentially downplaying the region's influence on two of MMA's most recognizable names.
  • Placing Gaethje alongside Razhababli as rare natural talents signals Fiziev's sharp awareness of the lightweight division's elite, where he currently sits at number seven.
