In a recent MMA Junkie Radio appearance following UFC 320, Youssef Zalal reinforced his callout of fellow featherweight contender Lerone Murphy. Zalal, speaking in the days after his Las Vegas bout with Josh Emmett, argued that Murphy is the matchup that makes the most sense for his next step up the rankings. He emphasized his readiness to face top-level competition and framed the callout as part of his push toward title contention. This public challenge keeps Zalal squarely in the featherweight conversation.

Youssef Zalal has made clear he wants Lerone Murphy next, doubling down on his public callout of the British featherweight contender during a recent appearance on MMA Junkie Radio in the days following UFC 320.

Zalal, who fought Josh Emmett in Las Vegas at that event, used the platform to argue that Murphy represents the logical next step for him in the 145-pound division. He framed the challenge as central to his push toward title contention, insisting he is ready to test himself against the upper tier of the featherweight rankings.

The 29-year-old American fighter, known as The Moroccan Devil, carries an 18-6-1 record and sits at number 12 in the featherweight division. Training out of Factory X, Zalal operates out of a switch stance and brings a well-rounded offensive game to the octagon. He lands 3.03 significant strikes per minute at a 50 percent accuracy rate, while also averaging 2.17 takedowns per 15 minutes and 1.4 submission attempts per 15 minutes — a combination that makes him a genuine threat across all phases.

Why it matters

  • A win over a ranked opponent like Murphy could push Zalal significantly up the featherweight ladder and into title contention range.
  • Zalal's grappling-heavy, high-volume style would create an interesting tactical puzzle for any top-ten featherweight.
  • The callout keeps Zalal visible in the divisional conversation at a moment when the featherweight rankings remain competitive and fluid.

Murphy has not publicly responded to the challenge, and no bout agreement has been announced.
