Undefeated boxing world champion Terence Crawford has opened up about why he chose to respond publicly to Ilia Topuria following Topuria's lightweight title loss to Justin Gaethje.

Crawford, 38, explained that Topuria was essentially off his radar until the Spanish fighter made bold public claims that he could knock out both Crawford and Canelo Alvarez. Those comments were enough to draw a response from the 41-0 southpaw, who stands five-foot-eight with a 74-inch reach and is widely regarded as one of the premier pound-for-pound boxers in the world. Crawford made clear that Topuria's words — not any pre-existing rivalry — were what prompted him to speak out.

Topuria, 29, enters this public back-and-forth from a position of some adversity. The Georgian-born, Spain-based fighter, who competes out of Climent Club, suffered his first professional loss, dropping to 17-1, when current lightweight champion Justin Gaethje stopped him. Ranked second in the lightweight division and first on the pound-for-pound list heading into that bout, Topuria had been one of MMA's most decorated fighters, landing 4.81 significant strikes per minute at 48 percent accuracy while also averaging nearly two takedowns per 15 minutes.

Gaethje, the lightweight champion at 37 years old, improved to 28-5 with the victory. Fighting out of Genesis Training Center, the Highlight lands a remarkable 6.48 significant strikes per minute at 58 percent accuracy, making him one of the most prolific and precise strikers in the division.
