Max Holloway's UFC 329 fight against Conor McGregor marked the first time he finished a bout in the opening round since August 2015, when Charles Oliveira suffered an injury in their first meeting. In the 19 fights Holloway had between those two occasions, every single one went beyond the first round.
Max Holloway ended a streak stretching back more than a decade when he finished Conor McGregor in the first round at UFC 329 on July 11, 2026. The last time Holloway had closed out a fight inside the opening five minutes was August 2015, when Charles Oliveira was unable to continue due to injury in their first encounter. In every one of the 19 bouts Holloway contested between those two occasions, the fight ran past round one.

Holloway, 34, holds a 28-9-0 record and is currently ranked fourth in the lightweight division, ninth pound-for-pound. The Hawaiian fights out of Gracie Technics and is one of the most prolific volume strikers in the sport, landing 6.92 significant strikes per minute at 48 percent accuracy. He stands five-foot-eleven with a 69-inch reach.
McGregor, 37, enters the record books at 22-7-0. Fighting out of SBG Ireland, the southpaw Irishman stands five-foot-nine with a 74-inch reach and has historically averaged 5.27 significant strikes per minute at 49 percent accuracy. He carries no current divisional ranking in the verified data.

The earlier fight that bookended the streak involved Oliveira, now 36 and ranked third in the lightweight division at 37-11-0. The Brazilian, known for his submission volume of 2.6 attempts per 15 minutes and a takedown rate of 2.22 per 15 minutes, has gone on to become one of the most decorated lightweights of his generation since that 2015 meeting with Holloway.

Why it matters
- The first-round finish snaps a streak of 19 consecutive fights in which Holloway failed to end matters in the opening round, underscoring an evolution in his finishing ability.
- At fourth in the lightweight rankings, a dominant stoppage performance strengthens Holloway's case for a title shot.
- McGregor's loss at 22-7-0 raises further questions about his standing in the lightweight picture.
