Asked why Wang Cong is receiving a title shot, Dana White ran through her resume and said she had beaten Rose Namajunas, Jessica Andrade and Alexa Grasso. Wang has never fought any of the three. White's justification for the title opportunity rested on those wins that do not exist.
UFC CEO Dana White pointed to wins over Rose Namajunas, Jessica Andrade and Alexa Grasso when asked why Wang Cong is getting a title shot. The problem: Wang has never fought any of the three.
White, asked to explain the opportunity, ran through what he described as the flyweight contender's resume. By his account, Wang had beaten Namajunas, Andrade and Grasso. None of those fights has taken place, meaning the justification he offered for the title opportunity rested on victories that do not exist.
The fighter at the center
Wang Cong, nicknamed "The Joker," is 10-1-0 and ranked eighth in the women's flyweight division. The 34-year-old southpaw stands five-foot-six, or 168 cm, with a 65-inch reach.
Her numbers show a busy, accurate striker. Wang lands 6.82 significant strikes per minute at 58 percent accuracy. She also mixes in grappling, averaging 0.62 takedowns and 0.6 submission attempts per 15 minutes.
Why it matters
- A title shot for an eighth-ranked fighter invites scrutiny over how contenders are chosen, and the explanation offered now carries inaccurate claims.
- The mistaken wins sit against a real record of 10-1-0, which White did not cite in his answer as reported.
- Namajunas, Andrade and Grasso are established names in the women's divisions, so attributing wins over them to Wang inflates her profile beyond what her actual fight history shows.
White's remarks put the focus on the gap between the case he made and the record Wang has actually built. Her genuine résumé is that of a 10-1 fighter with strong striking output and a ranking inside the top ten, but not one that includes the names he listed.
