John Kavanagh, the longtime head coach of SBG Ireland, has officially joined KI MMA in an ambassador role, Ariel Helwani reported. Kavanagh will work alongside Scott Coker and Rich Chou, and he described the job in broad terms: he handles whatever needs to be done for the organization.
The move gives KI MMA a recognizable name from the coaching side of the sport. Kavanagh built SBG Ireland into one of Europe's best-known gyms, and his title carries weight well beyond the team he represents.
Kavanagh is Irish, 38 years old, and fights out of SBG Ireland. He stands five-foot-nine (175 cm) with a 74-inch (188 cm) reach and competes from a southpaw stance. His professional record stands at 22-6-0.
His numbers show a fighter with a striking-first profile. He lands 5.32 significant strikes per minute at 49 percent accuracy, a rate that suggests efficiency as well as volume. His grappling output is modest by comparison: 0.67 takedowns per 15 minutes and 0.1 submission attempts per 15 minutes. A 22-6 record also means he has won roughly 79 percent of his professional fights, a mark that gives his move into an organizational role a competitive foundation.
Why it matters
- Kavanagh's addition puts a respected coaching voice next to Coker and Chou, two figures already attached to KI MMA.
- The role is defined loosely, which suggests an operational function rather than a narrow ceremonial one.
- His background in both competing and coaching gives the organization a perspective that spans the fighter side of the business.
No further details on the scope of Kavanagh's duties or any timeline for specific projects have been reported.
