Canelo Alvarez returns to the ring Saturday night in Riyadh, where he faces Christian Mbilli for the WBC title after a 13-month layoff.

The fight comes as Alvarez, a four-division champion and the former undisputed titleholder at 168 pounds, is 36 years old and coming off the first loss that truly hurt him. His time away was caused by elbow surgery and a training camp that was pushed back. He has said he has three or four fights left in his career.

Alvarez's preparation has also been the subject of a new advertisement with the prediction-market platform Kalshi. The 60-second spot shows a banda playing the Rocky theme in a basement gym, bunk beds, a frying pan and a mural of the Guadalajara hills with "Canelito" painted across it. It closes with Alvarez telling the mirror, "I'm still the favorite." The imagery leans on his story: the kid from Juanacatlan who sold paletas on buses before becoming one of boxing's biggest names.

His opponent arrives unbeaten. Mbilli is 29-0-1 with 24 knockouts and is described as throwing more punches than anyone Alvarez has faced. He holds the WBC belt only because Terence Crawford vacated it, which adds a note of unfinished business to a title that Alvarez is now chasing from the outside.

Why it matters

  • Age and activity: Alvarez is 36 and has been out for 13 months following elbow surgery, so ring rust is a genuine question.
  • Style clash: Mbilli's punch volume presents a different challenge from the opposition Alvarez has typically faced.
  • Legacy: With Alvarez openly counting down his remaining fights, a win would keep a late-career run alive, while a second straight loss would sharpen questions about how much longer he continues.

Mbilli's record is unbeaten but includes a draw, and his knockout rate is roughly 83 percent of his wins when measured against his 29 victories. Alvarez has not fought since his setback, meaning both men enter with something to prove for very different reasons.

The bout takes place Saturday in Riyadh.
