Islam Makhachev highlights construction problems in Dagestan amid flooding

The problems include new residential complexes of poor quality built too close together, numerous unauthorized construction projects, and general urban development chaos. Seventeen days ago, as flooding was already affecting Dagestan, Makhachev appealed to regional leadership to address construction issues, stating that Makhkachkala has turned into one chaotic construction site. Recently, he reposted content from geographer Dmitry Koryukhin, a school teacher in Dagestan originally from Yaroslavl who was named Teacher of the Year in 2025, showing aerial photographs that illustrate the urban planning disaster. The post notes this construction boom is happening across Russia, with massive residential complexes being built despite stagnant or declining populations in many major cities, resulting in semi-empty buildings that continue to be constructed.
