Negotiations are reportedly underway for a bout between lightweight champion Islam Makhachev and welterweight contender Ian Garry, according to journalist Álvaro Colmenero. The fight is not yet official, but the UFC is said to be actively working to finalize the matchup. Makhachev's next title defense is being targeted for UFC 330 in Philadelphia, with international fight week in July also emerging as a possible alternative window.

Makhachev, 34, holds a 28-1-0 record and carries the pound-for-pound top ranking into this negotiation. The Russian southpaw, who trains out of Eagles MMA, stands five-foot-ten with a 70-inch reach and has built his dominance through a combination of elite grappling and precise striking. He averages 3.2 takedowns per 15 minutes and lands 58 percent of his significant strikes, a remarkably high accuracy figure for any champion at any level.

One name that has been ruled out of the picture is undefeated welterweight contender Michael Morales. The 27-year-old Ecuadorian carries a perfect 19-0-0 record and ranks second in the welterweight division, but Colmenero's report confirms he will not be Makhachev's next opponent. Morales has drawn attention for his output, landing 5.62 significant strikes per minute, and owns a 79-inch reach that gives him an imposing physical presence at six feet tall.

Why it matters

  • Makhachev's next defense shapes the immediate future of the lightweight division
  • Ian Garry would represent a crossover challenge from welterweight, raising questions about divisional implications
  • Morales being removed from consideration leaves his path to a title shot unclear despite his unbeaten record
  • The UFC 330 or international fight week timeline suggests a summer booking is the target
