Topuria, 29, carries a 17-1-0 record into his upcoming lightweight bout against champion Justin Gaethje. Fighting out of Spain under the Climent Club banner, "El Matador" currently sits at number two in the lightweight division and holds the number-one spot in the pound-for-pound rankings. The clip underlines what his numbers already suggest: Topuria lands 4.81 significant strikes per minute at 48 percent accuracy, and he complements his striking with a takedown rate of 1.96 per 15 minutes, making him a difficult training partner to manage at any intensity.

Gaethje, the lightweight champion, brings a 28-5-0 record and a track record of brutally high-volume output. The 37-year-old from the United States, training out of Genesis Training Center, lands 6.48 significant strikes per minute at an impressive 58 percent accuracy — among the highest rates in the division. At six-foot-one with a 70-inch reach, he holds size and experience advantages over Topuria, who stands five-foot-seven with a 69-inch reach.

Why it matters

  • Topuria moving up to lightweight means he is still calibrating his output for a heavier, more durable division
  • The sparring footage signals a serious, high-intensity camp for a title challenge against one of the most dangerous strikers in the weight class
  • A style matchup between two orthodox, heavy-handed fighters with elite striking accuracy makes this one of the more anticipated lightweight bouts in recent memory
