UFC 328 sees rare double occurrence: fighters with 8+ takedowns lose title bouts

A historically rare phenomenon occurred twice at UFC 328 when fighters who completed eight or more takedowns in championship fights still lost their bouts. Throughout UFC history, fighters who land five or more takedowns in title fights win 81.08% of the time, while those landing seven or more win 83% of the time. However, both Khamzat Chimaev (9 takedowns) and Tatsuro Taira (8 takedowns) lost their respective title fights despite their wrestling success. The analysis suggests that while elite-level wrestlers maintain approximately 80% win probability, total universalism in skillsets remains superior to specialization, as wrestling is energy-intensive and highly dependent on health conditions, weight management, and other circumstances that can dramatically shift odds against skilled striker-grapplers.
