Sergei Pavlovich fired back at Alexander Volkov on May 27, pushing back against the heavyweight contender's suggestion that fighters like Pavlovich rely too heavily on a single powerful strike to win fights.

Pavlovich, ranked third in the UFC heavyweight division, was having none of it. The 34-year-old Russian, who fights out of Eagles MMA, carries a 20-3-0 record and has built his reputation as one of the most dangerous punchers in the division. Standing six-foot-three with a remarkable 84-inch reach, the southpaw lands 4.43 significant strikes per minute and has never recorded a submission attempt in his UFC career, underscoring just how committed he is to his striking game.

Volkov, who sits at number one in the heavyweight rankings, made the criticism from a position of considerable experience. The 37-year-old, known as "Drago," carries a 40-11-0 record and fights out of Strela Team in Russia. At six-foot-seven with an 80-inch reach, he is one of the tallest fighters in the division and posts an impressive 57 percent striking accuracy while landing 4.78 significant strikes per minute. Volkov has long been regarded as a technically disciplined heavyweight.

Pavlovich's retort was pointed: he suggested that circling the octagon on a bicycle is not exactly the most thrilling approach to heavyweight fighting either, a thinly veiled jab at what he views as Volkov's more cautious, movement-based style.

Why it matters

  • Both men sit inside the top three of the heavyweight rankings, making any friction between them divisionally significant.
  • The stylistic contrast is genuine: Volkov's technical volume striking versus Pavlovich's explosive, fight-ending power creates a compelling potential matchup.
  • A bout between the two Russian heavyweights would have clear title implications given their respective rankings.
