Ilia Topuria has come forward with a new explanation for why a highly anticipated clash with Islam Makhachev never came together, offering his perspective on the breakdown of negotiations surrounding what would have been one of the sport's most compelling superfights.

Topuria, known as "El Matador," holds a 17-1-0 record and currently sits at number one in the pound-for-pound rankings despite competing at lightweight, where he is ranked second in the division. The 29-year-old Spaniard is one of the most active strikers in the sport, landing 4.81 significant strikes per minute, and has shown well-rounded capabilities with nearly two takedowns per 15 minutes as well. He was most recently campaigning at featherweight before moving up in weight.

Makhachev enters the conversation as the reigning welterweight champion out of Russia, carrying a 28-1-0 record and holding the top spot in the pound-for-pound rankings at age 34. The Eagles MMA product is a dominant grappler who averages 3.2 takedowns per 15 minutes and lands strikes at a 58 percent accuracy rate, among the highest in the sport. His combination of control wrestling and sharp southpaw striking has made him a defining force in the UFC.

Notably, Topuria stressed in his remarks that he does not believe Makhachev is ducking the fight, framing the collapse of talks as a product of circumstances rather than reluctance from either side.

Why it matters

  • A Topuria vs. Makhachev bout would pit the top two fighters in the pound-for-pound rankings against each other
  • The stylistic clash between Topuria's high-volume striking and Makhachev's elite grappling represents one of the most compelling matchups the sport could offer
  • Any resolution to the stalled talks would carry significant cross-divisional title implications
