Ilia Topuria has taken aim at lightweight champion Justin Gaethje ahead of their meeting at UFC White House on June 14, publicly mocking the American's recent comments and labeling him an idiot.

Topuria, ranked number two in the lightweight division and the current pound-for-pound top fighter in the world, did not hold back when responding to remarks Gaethje made in a recent interview. The 29-year-old Spaniard reportedly laughed through his response, repeating a specific line from Gaethje's interview and ridiculing it directly. The exchange has sharpened the edge on what was already a compelling build-up to fight night.

Topuria carries a 17-1 record into the contest, having made the move up to lightweight after establishing himself as a featherweight force. Fighting out of Climent Club, the orthodox striker lands 4.81 significant strikes per minute at 48 percent accuracy, and also threatens regularly with takedowns and submission attempts.

Gaethje, meanwhile, holds the lightweight title with a record of 28-5 and brings some of the most fearsome output in the division. The 37-year-old from the United States lands 6.48 significant strikes per minute at an accuracy rate of 58 percent, making him one of the sport's most dangerous pressure fighters. He trains out of Genesis Training Center and fights orthodox at five feet eleven inches with a 70-inch reach.

Why it matters

  • Gaethje's lightweight title is on the line against the pound-for-pound number one fighter in the world
  • Topuria's willingness to engage publicly adds psychological pressure to the pre-fight build-up
  • A striking-heavy matchup is likely, with both men preferring to operate on the feet rather than on the canvas
