Charles Oliveira publicly accused Conor McGregor of deliberately avoiding a fight against him, stating McGregor chose to face Max Holloway because he believed it was the easier route. "He chose Max because he thinks he can beat Max. The truth is, he ran from me," Oliveira said. "He picked Max because he thought it was the easier path."

Charles Oliveira has leveled a sharp public accusation at Conor McGregor, claiming the Irish star deliberately sidestepped a fight with him and instead chose to face Max Holloway because he viewed it as the safer option.

Oliveira, speaking directly on the matter, left little room for interpretation. "He chose Max because he thinks he can beat Max. The truth is, he ran from me," the Brazilian said. "He picked Max because he thought it was the easier path."

The man making that charge carries serious credentials at 155 pounds. Ranked third in the lightweight division and eleventh on the pound-for-pound list, Oliveira holds a 37-11-0 record and remains one of the most dangerous finishers in the sport. The 36-year-old out of Chute Boxe Diego Lima completes takedowns at a rate of 2.22 per 15 minutes and generates submission attempts at 2.6 per 15 minutes, a combination that has long made him a nightmare matchup for opponents without elite grappling defense. He also lands significant strikes at a 54 percent accuracy clip, among the highest in his division.

Holloway, the fighter McGregor reportedly selected instead, is no soft touch. Ranked fourth at lightweight and ninth pound-for-pound, the 34-year-old Hawaiian carries a 27-9-0 record and an extraordinary output of 7.2 significant strikes landed per minute. At five-foot-eleven with a 69-inch reach, Holloway brings relentless forward pressure and volume that few fighters in any weight class can match.

McGregor, 37, holds a 22-6-0 record and returns to a lightweight division he has not competed in for several years. The southpaw from SBG Ireland stands five-foot-nine with a 74-inch reach and lands significant strikes at 5.32 per minute.

Why it matters

  • Oliveira sits one spot above Holloway in the lightweight rankings, making his callout a direct challenge to the division's hierarchy
  • McGregor's choice of opponent carries implicit title implications given both Oliveira and Holloway are ranked inside the top four
  • Oliveira's grappling-heavy style presents a starkly different threat profile than Holloway's volume striking game
