Topuria, known as "El Matador," entered the fight ranked second in the lightweight division and first in the pound-for-pound rankings, carrying a record of 17-1. The 29-year-old trains out of Climent Club and based himself in Spain, the country where the recovery images were taken. Standing five-foot-seven with a 69-inch reach, he had built his reputation on a well-rounded game, averaging 4.81 significant strikes per minute at 48 percent accuracy alongside 1.96 takedown attempts per 15 minutes.

Gaethje, now the lightweight champion at 37 years old, improved his record to 28-5 with the victory. The American out of Genesis Training Center is one of the division's most relentless pressure fighters, landing 6.48 significant strikes per minute at a 58 percent accuracy rate. At five-foot-eleven with a 70-inch reach, "The Highlight" held physical and positional advantages heading into the contest.

Why it matters

  • Topuria drops to 17-1 and will likely need to work back through the lightweight rankings before another title shot.
  • Gaethje's championship reign is now firmly established with a win over the division's top pound-for-pound talent.
  • The stylistic clash between Topuria's multi-dimensional attack and Gaethje's high-volume striking made this one of the division's most anticipated matchups.
