Dricus du Plessis has broken his silence on his middleweight title loss to Khamzat Chimaev, revealing that a preparation error played a significant role in what he described as a one-sided defeat.

Du Plessis, who holds a professional record of 23-3-0, entered the fight ranked second in the middleweight division and seventh pound-for-pound. The 32-year-old South African is one of the most active strikers in the division, landing 5.18 significant strikes per minute at 48 percent accuracy, and also contributes on the ground with 2.22 takedowns per 15 minutes. He had previously held the middleweight championship before falling to Chimaev, and he is now preparing for his return to competition.

Chimaev, fighting out of the United Arab Emirates under the Allstars Training Center banner, improved to 15-1-0 with the victory and holds the number-one middleweight ranking and the tenth spot in the pound-for-pound standings. The 32-year-old known as "Borz" is one of the most feared grapplers in the sport, averaging a remarkable 5.29 takedowns per 15 minutes alongside 1.8 submission attempts per 15 minutes. His 60 percent striking accuracy also marks him as a precise and efficient puncher.

Du Plessis did not deflect blame onto his opponent but instead pointed inward, acknowledging that his camp did not go according to plan ahead of the fight.

Why it matters

  • Du Plessis drops to 23-3-0 and falls from champion to second-ranked contender, reshaping the middleweight title picture
  • Chimaev's dominance at 15-1-0 as the division's top-ranked fighter cements him as the standard-bearer at 185 pounds
  • A future rematch carries significant weight, with du Plessis citing correctable factors as the root of the loss
  • The middleweight division's top two fighters are now separated by a result both camps will view as unfinished business
