UFC Record Breakdown
Cody Garbrandt is back, and this time he's stepping in against one of the division's most dangerous strikers in Adrian Yanez. After grinding out a decision win over Xiao Long back in March (despite Long getting two points deducted for repeated low blows), the former champ is looking to build some real momentum. Yanez just fought to a majority draw with Ricky Simon in his last outing, throwing a crazy 171 strikes and landing 73 of them. Dude stays busy on the feet. Here's the thing about Garbrandt.
If either guy lands clean in the first two rounds, this one could end in a hurry.
When he's on, that speed and power are still scary as hell. Remember when he slept Brian Kelleher in the first round at UFC 296? That version of Cody can crack anybody. But we've also seen the rough patches. That rear naked choke loss to Deiveson Figueiredo at UFC 300 and the decision loss to Raoni Barcelos showed he's still figuring things out at bantamweight after all these years.
He's 3-2 in his last five, mixing flashes of brilliance with tough nights. Yanez brings serious problems with his boxing and body work. He's got legit finishing power, as we saw when he put away Vinicius Salvador with ground and pound in under three minutes. But he's also been stopped twice by leg kicks (Jonathan Martinez) and punches (Rob Font), both in the first two rounds. This is a pure striker vs striker battle, and both guys have shown they can end it early or get caught themselves.
