Michael Morales posted a photo on social media suggesting a potential fight between himself and Carlos Prates to determine the next lightweight title challenger. The post asks whether these two should fight to decide who faces the champion, or if the answer is already clear. If Islam Makhachev versus Ian Garry happens at UFC 330 in August, the champion would not be ready for his next defense until November at the earliest. The post includes a poll asking fans who would win if UFC books Prates versus Morales.

Unbeaten Ecuadorian contender Michael Morales took to social media this week to float the idea of a welterweight contender clash between himself and Carlos Prates, framing the matchup as a potential way to determine who earns the next shot at the divisional title.

Morales, 27, carries a perfect 19-0 record and currently sits at number two in the welterweight rankings. Fighting out of Entram Gym, the six-foot Orthodox striker has been one of the division's most active offensive threats, landing an eye-catching 5.62 significant strikes per minute. His 79-inch reach gives him a physical edge over most opponents in the division.

Prates, nicknamed "The Nightmare," is ranked fifth at welterweight and brings a 24-7 record into the picture. The 32-year-old Brazilian, who trains with Vale Top Team, is a switch-stance fighter standing six-foot-one with a 78-inch reach. He lands 3.77 significant strikes per minute at 55 percent accuracy, making him a dangerous volume striker in his own right.

The social media post from Morales also raised the question of timing. With champion Islam Makhachev — who holds a 28-1 record and is the pound-for-pound number one fighter — reportedly targeted for a bout against Ian Garry at UFC 330 in August, the 34-year-old Russian southpaw from Eagles MMA would likely not be available for his next title defense until November at the earliest. That gap creates a window for the welterweight division to sort out its contender picture.

The post included a fan poll asking who would win a potential Prates versus Morales booking.

Why it matters

  • A matchup between the number-two and number-five ranked welterweights would have direct title implications heading into late 2026.
  • Both fighters are high-volume strikers, setting up a potentially explosive stylistic collision.
  • Morales remains undefeated and has yet to receive a title shot; a win over Prates would make his case nearly impossible to ignore.
