Charles Oliveira Says He Won't Chase BMF Belt if It Means Striking-Only Fight
Quick read

🚨 CHARLES OLIVEIRA DOESN'T WANT THE BMF BELT IF HE CAN'T USE HIS FULL MMA SKILL SET! Former UFC lightweight champion Charles Oliveira has made it clear that he's not interested in the BMF title if winning it means he has to stand and trade punches for an entire fight. 🗣️ “But the BMF fight is about going there and breaking each other up.’ Then, honestly brother, here’s the belt. Take it somewhere else, that belt is not for me.” Via: (@mmafighting)

Former UFC lightweight champion Charles Oliveira says he has no interest in the BMF title if winning it would require a straight striking contest, as first reported by MMA Fighting.

Oliveira's objection is to the premise of the belt itself. Paraphrasing his comments, he said the BMF fight is about going in and breaking each other up, and that if that is the requirement, the belt can go to someone else because it is not for him. He wants to use his complete MMA skill set rather than trade punches for the entire fight.

Oliveira, 37, is a Brazilian lightweight with a 37-11-0 record. He is ranked third in the division and 11th in the pound-for-pound standings. The Chute Boxe Diego Lima product stands five-foot-ten, with a 74-inch reach, and fights from an orthodox stance.

His numbers back up the argument that his game goes well beyond standing exchanges. Oliveira averages 2.6 submission attempts per 15 minutes and 2.22 takedowns per 15 minutes. On the feet, he lands 3.35 significant strikes per minute at 54 percent accuracy. A fighter who threatens as much on the mat as he does standing would give up a lot in a contest built purely around striking.

His recent form is also strong. His most recent recorded fight was a unanimous decision win over Max Holloway on March 7, 2026, at UFC 326, a result that went the full five rounds. Before that, he submitted Mateusz Gamrot in the second round on October 11, 2025. His most recent recorded loss came in a title fight against Ilia Topuria at UFC 317 on June 28, 2025, which ended in a first-round KO/TKO.

Why it matters

  • Oliveira is saying he would pass on the BMF title rather than accept a fight stripped of grappling, an unusual stance given the belt's reputation for brawls.
  • Two of his three most recent recorded fights ended in wins, one by submission, which fits his preference for a full-range approach.
  • His 2.6 submission attempts per 15 minutes is a defining part of his rĂ©sumĂ© and a tool he would not want taken off the table.
