Alexander Volkov Ends Pursuit of UFC Heavyweight Title After Repeated Snubs
Quick read

Alexander Volkov says he is no longer hunting the UFC heavyweight belt, stating the title doesn't define him and that he remains a champion by himself. The Russian has fought 20 times in the UFC and headlined seven events since signing in 2016, winning seven of his last eight, yet has never received a title shot. Volkov made the comments on The Ariel Helwani Show a week after an awkward exchange with Dana White at the UFC 333 press conference. He pointed to Ciryl Gane, now undisputed champion after Tom Aspinall vacated, as having continued to receive opportunities while Volkov remains passed over.

Alexander Volkov says he has stopped chasing the UFC heavyweight championship, arguing that a belt does not define him and that he is already a champion on his own terms. Bloody Elbow reported the comments, which Volkov made on The Ariel Helwani Show, a week after an awkward exchange with Dana White at the UFC 333 press conference.

The Russian has fought 20 times in the UFC and headlined seven events since signing in 2016. He has won seven of his last eight, yet has never been given a title shot. He pointed to Ciryl Gane, now undisputed champion after Tom Aspinall vacated, as a fighter who kept receiving opportunities while Volkov was passed over.

Volkov, 38, is 41-11 and ranked second at heavyweight. He is six-foot-seven with an 80-inch reach, and he lands 4.84 significant strikes per minute at 57 percent accuracy. His most recent recorded fight came at UFC 333 on October 24, 2026, where he beat Rizvan Kuniev by unanimous decision. Before that he beat Waldo Cortes Acosta by unanimous decision at UFC 328 in May and Jailton Almeida by split decision at UFC 321 in October 2025.

Gane, 36, is 14-2 and holds the heavyweight title. He won it with a second-round KO/TKO of Alex Pereira at UFC Freedom 250 on June 14, 2026. The Frenchman lands 5.29 significant strikes per minute at 61 percent accuracy.

Aspinall, 33, is 15-3 and sits first in the heavyweight rankings and sixth in the pound-for-pound list. His fight with Gane at UFC 321 ended in a no contest after the opening round.

Why it matters

  • Volkov has lost to both men he is talking about: Gane by unanimous decision in 2021 and by split decision at UFC 310 in December 2024, and Aspinall by first-round submission in 2022.
  • The split-decision loss to Gane is the only one of those fights that went to the scorecards without a clear margin, and it is the most recent of the three.
  • The age gap is small. Volkov is two years older than Gane and five years older than Aspinall.
  • His complaint touches the sport's matchmaking: a top-two ranked contender on a seven-in-eight run still has no title bout on his record.
