This ranking uses the control credited to one fighter, not the two fighters' combined time. The Format column shows the scheduled length, even if a bout ended early. Every entry in this top 25 came from a five-round booking.
How this list is counted
AgentMMA starts with the round-by-round control fields in its UFC Stats-derived records. It adds each fighter's control across every round of one bout. A mark of 22:22 means 22 minutes and 22 seconds of credited control. The opponent's control time isn't added.
UFC control time explained covers what the clock measures. In plain terms, it tracks time spent holding a controlling ground or clinch position. It doesn't measure damage, submission danger or how close a fighter came to a finish.
Control is a duration, not a grade for the work done. A long total may contain fence pressure, active ground offense, quiet positional holds or a mix. The stat doesn't divide those seconds by quality. Read this as a record of sustained position, then use strikes, submission attempts and the result for context.
Any UFC bout with stored round data can qualify. There is no career minimum and no minimum number of UFC appearances. One qualifying fight is enough. A fight in another promotion never enters this list, even if it appears in a fighter's pro record.
The Result column follows UFC Stats as stored in AgentMMA's database. If an official result was overturned, it counts as a no-contest. The Format column gives the scheduled length, either three or five rounds. It doesn't claim every scheduled round was completed.
The ranking keeps exact minutes and seconds. It doesn't convert the clock to decimal minutes or adjust it for a bout's completed length. A fighter gets only the control recorded before the contest ended. That makes the rule simple to repeat after each new card.
The UFC's public record book mostly shows career control totals and applies a five-fight minimum to several rate categories. This page answers a narrower question about one bout, so it has no five-fight minimum.
Some independent UFC Stats record books show Sherk at 22:18 and Ortiz at 21:32. AgentMMA reports 22:22 and 21:34 because this page sums the round values stored in AgentMMA's own database snapshot. Different UFC Stats imports or later source revisions can move an archived total by a few seconds.
That difference doesn't change the method or the supplied order. This is AgentMMA's maintained database view, dated on the page. If a stored source value is revised, the next computation can reflect it rather than silently replacing an older result.
Notable names on the list
Sean Sherk owns two places
Sean Sherk leads with 22:22 against Hermes Franca. He also sits 11th with 19:48 against Kenny Florian. No other fighter has two entries inside the top 11. The UFC announced Sherk's retirement in 2013, so both marks are closed chapters rather than active runs.
Khamzat Chimaev came within 42 seconds
Khamzat Chimaev produced 21:40 against Dricus Du Plessis at UFC 319. That left him 42 seconds short of AgentMMA's lead mark. The win gave Chimaev the middleweight title. UFC results show Sean Strickland later took that belt from him by split decision at UFC 328 in May 2026.
Tito Ortiz and Randy Couture fill the next two spots
Tito Ortiz controlled Vladimir Matyushenko for 21:34 at UFC 33. Two years later, Randy Couture recorded 21:13 against Ortiz at UFC 44. Both men are retired, and their entries show how much early five-round title fights shape this list.
Chael Sonnen is the exception
Chael Sonnen is the only fighter in the table credited with a loss. He controlled Anderson Silva for 19:53 at UFC 117, then lost by fifth-round submission. The UFC later placed that fight in its Hall of Fame. It is the clearest warning against treating control time as a scorecard.
Two recent title fights changed the order
Islam Makhachev posted 19:10 against Jack Della Maddalena at UFC 322. UFC coverage records a unanimous decision and a second-division title for Makhachev. Charles Oliveira then reached 20:49 against Max Holloway at UFC 326. He won that bout by unanimous decision.

How solid is this data?
The sample covers 8,928 UFC bouts with round-by-round stats. It runs from March 11, 1994, through October 17, 2026. That gives strong coverage of modern UFC history, but it isn't a claim that every old bout has a usable control clock.
Round-by-round figures exist for nearly every UFC bout since 2000 and for most bouts from the 1990s. A missing early fight can't appear here. AgentMMA doesn't estimate its control time from video or reports.
Only UFC fights count. Bouts from Pride, Bellator, ACA or any other promotion stay out. They can still appear in a profile field labelled pro record, which covers a fighter's wider career.
Stored UFC Stats results control the Result column. An overturned win becomes a no-contest. That rule keeps the table tied to the official result history rather than the call made on fight night.
Five-round fights have a large built-in advantage. A three-round bout can last only 15 minutes, so it cannot reach the current 22:22 record. That is why the Format column matters and why every row here says five rounds.
AgentMMA refreshes this maintained page after new results change the order. The next update will follow the first completed UFC card that creates a new top-25 mark or changes a stored result.
FAQ
What is the most control time in a UFC fight?
AgentMMA's record is Sean Sherk's 22:22 against Hermes Franca at UFC 73 on July 7, 2007. It leads a study of 8,928 UFC bouts through October 17, 2026.
Who holds the UFC control time record for one fight?
Sean Sherk holds it in AgentMMA's database with 22:22. Khamzat Chimaev ranks second at 21:40, and Tito Ortiz ranks third at 21:34.
Why do some UFC control-time lists show 22:18?
They use a different UFC Stats import or a revised public source value. AgentMMA's maintained table preserves the round totals stored in its database, which sum to 22:22.
What does UFC control time mean?
It is the time credited while a fighter holds a controlling position on the ground or in the clinch. It doesn't, by itself, measure damage or decide a round.
Does more control time always win a UFC fight?
No. Chael Sonnen logged 19:53 against Anderson Silva but lost by submission in round five. Judges score effective work, and a finish ends the contest outright.
Is this the same as the UFC career control-time record?
No. This page ranks one fighter's total in one bout. Career lists add control across many UFC appearances, so they answer a different question.
